How many of you out there feel guilty for constantly asking God for forgiveness? I know that I sure do.
Obviously, I know that we are not perfect and we constantly sin, no matter how hard we may try not to.
But so many times when I get on my knees to pray, I wonder if God wonders why am I back in this spot and why I am still here asking for forgiveness for a sin for the 1000th time, only to be forgiven and find myself messing up again.
I know that God forgives us and His grace is enough and He does not keep record of wrong, but it’s hard for me not to feel guilty for constantly falling short of my goal, which is to be more and more like the person He desires me to be.
Let’s just take lying for example. We know that it is wrong. It’s one of the Ten Commandments for goodness sake, but most all of us have lied.
And needles to say, we all have probably not just lied once and then that was it.
When we ask for forgiveness for lying it is unrealistic to think that we may never lie again even though that we know that it is wrong and that God doesn’t want us to do so.
Another example that comes to mind is speeding. We know that there are laws against speeding. We know that if you speed that there could possibly be fines that you have to pay and you could even lose your license and not to mention you could even harm or injure yourself or others.
We all still speed anyway. Just because you get a ticket, pay the fine and even though your insurance could go up, we still do it.
Why is that?
I still ask myself the same question when I sin and do things that I know I’m not supposed to do.
But in the moment that I sin and choose to do what I want to do rather than what I know God would want me to do, I’m not thinking about the effect or what might come later.
I’m only thinking of things in that moment.
And when we do things that we know that we shouldn’t, there will always be a price to pay.
For me, one of the biggest prices to pay is the guilt that accompanies the sin. I might not feel it in the moment, but that’s the allure of sin.
Adam and Eve didn’t worry about the result of eating fruit from the tree. They just worried about the benefit in the moment and doing what they wanted to do.
You don’t think afterwards if they had a mulligan they wouldn’t change their mind.
God gives us a mulligan and forgives us each and every time that we ask, but I still can’t help but wonder if he just shakes his head because we can’t seem to get out of our own way at times.
But maybe we aren’t supposed to.
Because if we think that we can go very long on our own accord and not make a mistake and sin then we are mistaken.
There is only one person that ever went through life perfect and unblemished and that was Jesus.
So why should we think that we have a shot to come anywhere close to Him and his flawless track record?
But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t keep striving each and everyday to be more and more like Him!!!
No matter how often we fall and how many times we come up short, which will be often!!!
The thing about temptation is that it never goes away. Do you think the Devil would let that happen?
At times I feel the more and more you try to be like Jesus the more that temptation crosses your path.
The good thing is that it isn’t a sin to be tempted, it’s just what we choose to do when we are in that crossroads between doing what our human instinct may want us to do and what we know that we should do.
If we could take a moment in those situations and ask, Would the Lord would want us to do? Does this honor Him? Does this bring me closer to Him?
The answer would be loud and clear!!!
But we don’t do that. I know that I sure don’t!!!
But despite all the choices that we make and all the things that we do that we shouldn’t, the grace and forgiveness of God is bigger than our sins and it never runs out.
How incredible is it that we have a Lord and Savior that keeps no record of wrong, never stops welcoming us back and never stops loving us….. no matter how far off track we get!!!!
So even though it might seem to us that God might feel like the character Bill Murray plays in Groundhog Day, it’s role that he understands and it’s a role that no one can play better than him!!!! And it is a role that no one is more perfect to fill than our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
